The Redemptive Love of God

December 25, 2025Kasey Veach

Romans 5:8 (ESV): “But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

This verse shows that love came without conditions.

I love pizza. I love my children. I love Jesus. Three sentences, the same word—love—but each with a different meaning. Now, switch the “I” in the sentence: God loves you. What does this mean? Two words come to mind: sacrificial and unconditional.

Does God love everyone? Yes. Benevolently, across the board. He loves believers redemptively—to restore, redeem, and draw us to Himself.

There is so much to say about love, yet it is also one of the simplest ideas in the Bible. 1 Corinthians 13:2 and the surrounding verses make it clear: without love, we are nothing. Love is the foundation of life in Christ. As believers, love should be the cornerstone of everything we do.

We are able to love only because God loved us first (John 4:19). Our ability to love Him and others flows from the love He has already poured into our hearts. Since we have experienced God’s unconditional love, we are called to show that same selfless, sacrificial love to one another. The greatest command is to love God and love others, choosing compassion and service instead of selfishness.

Reflection Question:

How can you tangibly see God’s love in your life right now?
