Sermon Discussion Questions: Three Ways to Spur on Spiritual Growth

We have prepared the following questions to accompany the sermon from Sunday, February 2, 2019. They are meant to be used for personal reflection, family devotions, and/or small groups.

Main Scripture (ESV)

1 Peter 2:1 So put away all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander.Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation— if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good. (Full Chapter)

Three Ways to Spur on Spiritual Growth

  1. Remember God’s Goodness (v. 3)
    • In what ways can living in a post-Christian culture impact spiritual growth?
    • In the midst of the negativity and immorality around us, how can Christians guard from being overcome with negative thinking? (Hint: Read Psalm 1)
    • Read Philippians 4:8. How does meditating on God’s Word and His goodness impact our spiritual growth?
  2. Refuse the World’s Ways (v. 1)
    • Define the following five attitudes/actions:
      1. Malice
      2. Deceit
      3. Hypocrisy
      4. Envy
      5. Slander
    • Why are the above sins not congruent with a life that has been changed by the Gospel?
    • Pastor Chris gave an illustration about junk food. What does the world’s junk food do to our spiritual appetite?
  3. Relish God’s Word (v. 2)
    • What is the “pure spiritual milk” that Peter refers to in verse 2?
    • According to this verse, what are believers to do with the Word of God?
    • Read 2 Timothy 3:16,17. Why is reading and savoring the Bible so imperative to our spiritual growth?

Application Questions

  • Sin will stunt our spiritual growth and will ruin our spiritual appetite. Do you struggle with any of the aforementioned sins? Are there particular sins that you struggle with? Are there any sins you need to confess before the Lord?
  • We make time for what we are passionate about. What does your calendar say is most important to you? How much time do you spend reading the the Bible? How can you raise your affections for God’s Word?
  • Jesus Christ has gone to extreme lengths to ransom us and to bring us into God’s family. How can meditating on the person and the work of Jesus help us in our daily lives?

We hope this helps you! If you have any questions, email us at info@myrealchurch.org.
